Trans Catalina Island Trail

A 38.5-mile adventure through Catalina Island’s rugged hills and breathtaking coastline. The trail offers endless ridge walks with ocean views, making it truly memorable. Hiking among bison and spotting island foxes added a unique touch to the experience.

Trail Overview

The TCT begins in Avalon, Catalina Island’s main town, and winds across the island’s interior before ending at Parsons Landing on the northern coast. Hikers will experience a variety of terrains, from steep ascents and descents to serene beachside trails. The trail is well-marked but requires proper preparation due to its elevation gains and limited water sources.

What to Expect on the Trail

  • Distance: 38.5 miles (with optional detours)

  • Elevation Gain: ~9,600 feet total

  • Duration: 3–5 days, depending on pace

  • Difficulty: Strenuous – steep inclines and exposed terrain

  • Best Time to Hike: Fall through spring for cooler temperatures

Campsites & Permits

Backcountry camping is required along the trail, and reservations must be made in advance through the Catalina Island Conservancy. Key campgrounds include:

  • Hermit Gulch (Near Avalon – a good first night option)

  • Black Jack Campground (Located in the island’s interior)

  • Little Harbor (A scenic oceanfront site)

  • Two Harbors (A small town with amenities)

  • Parsons Landing (A secluded beachside campsite)

Wildlife & Scenery

Catalina Island is home to a unique ecosystem, including free-roaming bison, which were introduced for a film in the 1920s, Catalina Island foxes, and a variety of seabirds. Hikers will pass through lush valleys, windswept ridges, and stunning coastal cliffs with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.

Logistics & Preparation

  • Ferries: The island is accessible via ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point, and Newport Beach.

  • Water: Potable water is available at campgrounds, but filtering or carrying extra water is recommended.

  • Gear: Due to the steep terrain and lack of shade, ultralight backpacking gear, ample sun protection, and sturdy footwear are essential.
